Crushed stone aggregates are produced by crushing quarried rock, then screening it to sizes appropriate for the intended use. Production of crushed stone has three stages Primary crushing to break down the stone to a manageable size secondary and tertiary crushing to render the rocks into sizes specific to their applications and screening to separate the crushed stone for further processing.
Aggregates may be broadly classi fied as natural or artificial, both with respect to source and to method of preparation. Natural sands and gravels are the product of weathering and the action of wind or water, while manufactured crushed fine aggregate and crushed stone coarse and fine aggregate are produced by crushing natural stone.
Crushed stone is produced by crushing quarry rock, boul-ders, cobbles, or large-size gravel. Crushed air-cooled blast-furnace slag is also used as fine or coarse aggregate. The aggregates are usually washed and graded at the pit or plant. Some variation in the type, quality, cleanli-ness, grading, moisture content, and other properties is expected.
Both gravel and crushed stone produce quality concrete. Gravel will have a lower water demand compared to crushed stone. Gravel is preferred for exposed-aggregate concrete in walkways and decorative applications. Crushed stone will usually exhibit a higher paste-aggregate bond. For additional information about aggregates and concrete mix.
The crushing value of aggregates is measured in the ratio between the crushed aggregates, obtained from the IS sieve 2.36mm and the weight of the dried aggregate sample. At least three samples should be tested from the same batch and average value to get accurate results. The crushing value of aggregate = (W2 W1) x 100. Lab Report.
Recycled Aggregate Characteristics. The crushing characteristics of hardened concrete are similar to those of natural rock and are not significantly affected by the grade or quality of the original concrete. Recycled concrete aggregates produced from all but the poorest quality original concrete can be expected to pass the same tests required.

Designations of recycled aggregate other than RCA are of lower quality and may contain significant quantities of masonry which would preclude or limit their use in structural concrete.

Produce crushed aggregate, or to produce manufactured sands. Crushing generally is carried out in one or two stages, although three-stage crushing may also be performed.
